You've Adopted a Rescue Dog: Should You Rename Your New Best Friend?
Yes, we do believe it is a good idea to change a newly adopted dog's name.
There are several reasons to consider this. First, it is generally pretty easy for a dog to learn a new name. Second, renaming the dog gives the new family an immediate reason to spend time with, bond, and give attention to the dog. Third, it is impossible for one to use the ‘old’ name in the same way as the former owner, so the dog may not respond to his old name in his new home anyway. And lastly, taking on a new name often helps the adoptive owner emotionally ‘claim’ the new dog as a family member, rather than subconsciously keeping the animal at an emotional distance (e.g., as ‘someone else’s dog') which increases the likelihood that this will be the dog's forever home.
So… take on a new name! A couple of things to keep in mind:
#1) Have the new name sound completely different than the old one. For example with the name Bosley… a one-syllable name like Hank or Max would be an easier name for Bosley to learn than, say, Cosby or Bailey (both rhyme and end in ‘y’).
#2) Play the Name Game for a week or two to help your new pet learn the new name. Choose a moment when your dog is looking away from you, then happily say his new name. When he turns around and looks at you, make a big deal about it: light up your smile and fuss over him, or run to the cookie jar and give him a treat! Give him a reason to really love to hear you say his name!
So, have fun and pick out a great new name for your newly adopted pet! And don't forget...Riverdog always gives 10% off your first service for any dog rescued in the past 60 days!
