Teaching 'Watch' - One Key to an Obedient Dog

One of the best concepts in dog training is the notion that if your dog is focused on you, he or she can't be engaging in less desirable behaviors elsewhere. A dog who is 'watching' his owner cannot be pulling on leash or chasing a squirrel at the same time. So, a reliable 'Watch!" is a handy command for any dog/owner pair.

Teaching 'Watch' is fun, and simple. With food in your hand, stand in front of your dog, show him the food then extend your arm out beside you, slowly, until your hand with the food in it is parallel to the ground, fully extended. Say nothing at this point. When your dog looks away from the food and back at you, say 'Good Watch!', smile, bring the food back in near your eyes, then give it to the dog. Repeat this until your dog no longer follows the food with his eye, instead focuses on you the entire time knowing he/she'll be rewarding for 'Watch!'

Some dogs pick this up real quick, others follow the food intently with their eyes for a long time or try and jump up in an attempt to get it, before looking at you. Ignore everything, say nothing. Wait for the eye contact....then light up like a Christmas tree! "Good Watch!"

We encourage you to make 'Watch!' a fun obedience game, and practice it often. Because gaining your dog's attention is one key to an obedient dog!
