Teach Your Dog to "Move" - One Key to an Obedient Dog
In the canine world, leaders are given a respectful distance. Leader animals are not mauled or body blocked. This is not only a show of respect, but also so that the leader can move about at will, carrying out responsibilities freely.
This is also true in the human world. For example, if a 5-Star General in the Armed Forces was walking towards you in a narrow hallway...you wouldn't stand in the way; wouldn't you move off to the side and let him or her pass? When we recognize true leadership, we willingly and gladly step aside so the leader can carry on. So should your dog!
If you want a better behaved dog, be a better leader. Insist that your pet move out of your way when you ask. Don't step over your pet when she lays in the doorway. Or in the middle of the kitchen as you are preparing food. Quietly ask for a "Move" and walk where you were going to walk.. gently go forward in the direction you were planning - shuffle your feet if you have to - until your pet decides to give the right of way and move over. When that happens, be sure to reward your pet!
Praise and practice this consistently, and you will find that as your dog believes in you as the leader, a lot of unacceptable behaviors simply fade away.
