Remembering River
Hello, friends.
I am writing to let you know that we let go of our beloved “River” in January. We have all grieved terribly over the loss of our inspiration and mascot, this Red Doberman whom we all called our own.
River was simply the most incredible dog I have ever known. We were attached in a way I never imagined or expected when I picked him up as a puppy 11 years ago. He has inspired an entire generation of trainers, dog enthusiasts, children, and business people with his beauty, his personality, and his presence. He knew over thirty tricks, performed at dozens of schools, meetings, clubs, and retirement communities. He was the foundation of this company, and was one of the most well known dogs in our community.
While many other dogs have amassed more performance titles than River, I always was very proud that he was sold to me as a ‘pet’, not a show dog. The fact that he ended up as International/Canadian/American Champion Ajay’s Leading River’s Edge, CGC, CD, WAE, ROM was all a tribute to this dog’s heart, love of people, and love of life.
He struggled this past year with arthritis, a bit of Wobblers, and a weakened heart. All the staff had a chance to say goodbye to him, which touched me greatly, and he was in my arms when I let him go - very sleepy, peaceful, and as dignified as ever.
He was truly one in a million.
Great dogs make great memories. River was the Original Riverdog – a wonderful mascot, inspiration, and companion. I am – we are – heartbroken to lose him, simply because there was never a dog more loved than he.
I would like to thank those of you who have reached out to all of us, and comforted us these past few months. Also, many heartfelt thanks to the North Bend Animal Clinic and Issaquah Veterinary Hospital for their loving support and care of River, to Linda Shea for her expert instruction in competition obedience, and to Polly Klein for her communication support when the time was near.
And to my wonderful staff, whom River loved dearly.
